Objective

The orientation programme, held under the theme "From Ideas to Impact: Choosing the Right Research Path," aimed to introduce students to the foundational aspects of academic research and equip them with the skills necessary to identify, plan, and execute meaningful research projects. The session sought to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and applied research by guiding students through the process of selecting suitable and innovative project topics within the disciplines of Mathematics and Statistics.

Activity Description

The programme was organised by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, St. Teresa's College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, as part of the RISE (Research and Innovation series ) — Research Week 2026. It was conducted on 9 June 2026 at 12:30 PM in Room No. 81, with Ms. Ann Mary Teena, Research Scholar, as the resource person.

The session covered key areas including the identification of suitable research topics, an overview of research methodologies, strategies for selecting innovative yet feasible research areas, effective planning and execution of academic projects, and awareness of common pitfalls to avoid during project work. The programme was coordinated by Athulyadevi A P (Student Co-ordinator) and Dr. Jinta Jose (Faculty Co-ordinator).

Outcomes

Upon completion of the programme, students were expected to:

Develop clarity on how to choose a research topic aligned with their academic interests and departmental scope.

Gain a foundational understanding of various research methodologies applicable to Mathematics and Statistics projects.

Build confidence in approaching project work systematically and independently.

Recognise and avoid common errors that students typically encounter during academic research.

Feel motivated and better prepared to undertake their final year or semester research projects with a well-defined research path.
