The Department of Psychology, St. Teresa's College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, organized a session titled "Indian Knowledge Systems — A Holistic Approach to Mental Health" for UG first-year students on 24th February 2026. The session was conducted by Ms. Aaliya Tariq, M.Sc. Psychology first-year student, who presented on the relevance of Indian knowledge systems in understanding psychology and mental health. Drawing from foundational texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Yoga Sutras, she highlighted how Indian psychology differs from its Western counterpart by emphasizing consciousness, balance, and harmony rather than merely restoring normalcy. The session explored the four layers of the mind — Manas, Buddhi, Ahamkara, and Atman — and the dynamic view of personality through the concepts of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas, underscoring that personality is not fixed but can be transformed through awareness and practice. Practical approaches such as mindfulness, meditation, and yoga were also discussed, demonstrating their role in cultivating peace, clarity, and resilience in everyday life. The session concluded with a brief introduction to acupuncture, followed by a live demonstration on two students, which fascinated participants and sparked curiosity about its potential in holistic healing.
