The Department Of English And Centre For Research,St.Teresa's College (Autonomous), Ernakulam hosted a national seminar titled "Rescripting Culture: From Humanism to Posthumanism" on December 16, 2022. The programme commenced with an introduction to the theme followed by prayer. Dr. Preeti Kumar, Head of the Department of English and Centre for Research welcomed the gathering and spoke about the radical repositioning in the domain of Humanities and the changing paradigms regarding what it means to be human. The president of the national seminar Rev. Dr. Sr. Vinitha CSST, Provincial Superior and Manager of the college shared her critical thoughts on what it means to think beyond humanism in contemporary times. The invited speaker and chief guest of the day Dr. Avishek Parui, Associate Professor, IIT Chennai delivered the keynote address and deliberated on how both creative thought and critical practice regarding the notion of post humanism have existed across centuries and the way in which this philosophical sensibility has altered the critical thoughts pertaining to literature. By attempting post humanist readings of diverse works of literature and Philosophy like Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein and Antonio Damasio's Descartes Error and Looking for Spinoza, he observed that history has always fuelled the engines of post humanism. By drawing a connection with the realm of memory studies he expressed the radical thought that remembering and forgetting are not ontological opposites, rather, part of a continuum and that forgetting is a necessity required for remembering. The session was attended by academicians, researchers and students from various institutions across the state who also presented research papers based on the theme of the seminar. A total of 47 participants presented their research papers during the seminar (23 online paper presentations-24 offline presentations). 61 participants registered in total for the seminar.
